About Us

The "Alpine Attraction" to Wrightman Alpines

Established in 1985, our nursery grows about 2000 species and varieties of alpine plants. Our mail order catalogue lists over 600 alpines and perennials which we ship to enthusiasts throughout Canada and the United States.

The display gardens demonstrate a variety of landscaping techniques using stone as the main building material. Dry-laid stone walls and flagstone pathways along the foundation of the house, hold tufa crevice gardens, are a collaboration of Josef Halda and Harvey Wrightman’s construction. Hand-chiseled stone troughs are displayed as examples of container gardening.  Crevice gardens constructed of tufa and limestone and a backyard scree garden, form the backdrop for a myriad of colours, texture and forms of our favorite alpine plants. Ponds and bogs add a naturalized look throughout alpine gardens.A newly organized and easily accessible sales area makes it a pleasant experience to view our available plants. Spring and early summer are the best blooming times for alpine plants, so it is recommended to drop by then!

The main feature of the alpine garden is the crevice gardens. They are a combination of paving (flagwork) and wall construction, with the added feature that the plane of reference is tilted, making the rock formation appear skewed. This tipping of the plane of reference results in vertical and angled fissures in the rock, giving the appearance of a natural outcrop on a mountain slope.

We look forward to seeing you.
